NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WTVA) -  A five vehicle wreck halts both eastbound lanes of traffic on Highway 78 just outside of New Albany.

The accident happened around 1:30 p.m.

Both New Albany Police, the Union County Sheriff's Department and Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to the accident.

Eastbound lanes were shut down for about 30 minutes before one lane reopened.

Trooper Ray Hall of the Mississippi Highway Patrol said nobody was killed in the wreck.

"We're very fortunate, not any serious injuries," Hall said. "This is a prime example of it. It started with one vehicle rear-ended and another one, and that started a chain reaction. [We stress the importance of asking] people to slow down. Be careful as [you're] traveling home for this Christmas season."

There are extra troopers working the roads over the holiday season to compensate for the extra traffic.
