BELMONT, Miss. (WTVA) -- Tishomingo County officials are well on their way to increasing the length of the airport runway.
Tishomingo County District Five Supervisor Greg Collier says the county has received an FAA grant to purchase four pieces of property adjacent to the airport.
The $468,000 grant paves the way for the runway to be extended to 5,000 feet.
Collier says the airport is an essential tool to recruit new industry and to meet the needs of existing employers who use a plane for transportation.
"This will be a big benefit in assets to the businesses that are already here in our community because there are a lot of different wholesale places here and there are also the new businesses coming in."
Members of Mississippi congressional delegation are credited with helping acquire the grant for Tishomingo County.
