BELMONT, Miss. (WTVA) -- A little more runway could mean a lot more industry.
At least that is the hope of Tishomingo County officials who are considering a project to extend the airport's runway.
If all goes as planned, the runway would be extended from 2,750 feet to 5,000 feet.
Two pieces of property have been purchased by the county to make it possible to extend the runway which is adjacent to the Belmont Tishomingo County Industrial Park.
"The town stepped up to agree to close (Dickinson Road) and some stuff we're looking at to go forward with it and we want to be able to extend it and hopefully with help from the Mississippi Development Authority and the FAA, we can get some funds to do that," Tishomingo County Supervisor Greg Collier said.
Collier says this effort is only in the planning stages.
It could be two years before the runway is extended.
