RIPLEY, Miss. (WTVA) -- A boy from Tippah County can now call himself the best speller in his area.

Pine Grove seventh grader Mason Roberson won the county's spelling bee Saturday.

He was up against 17 other children for the title.

Now that he has won, he qualifies for the regional spelling bee in Memphis to be held in March.

The winner of that competition will go on to the national level.

The organizer of the spelling bee says spelling words is no easy feat.

"It takes a lot of presence of mind to stand before a group of adults, a group of judges, your peers and to just stand there and take that word out of a list of hundreds of words and think how to spell it," spelling bee coordinator Melinda Marsalis said.

The word Mason had to spell to win was roustabout.
