RIPLEY, Miss. (WTVA) - It's a call no parent wants to receive, but it's one the Madrigal family got on Thursday as they learned a terrible tragedy had taken place: their son, 28 year old Carlos Madrigal, was dead following a tornado in Kemper County.
"[A family member] said that [the officials] had found Carlos under some tin and that he was unconscious," Carlos' stepmother Lisa Madrigal said. "He said he would call me back and let me know what was going on, but the next call I got from him said Carlos had passed away. They tried to work with him, tried to bring him back, but he was gone."
On the day tornado that struck, Carlos' family said he was doing what he loved to do best: welding. He had hopes and dreams of one day working at his father's business in Ripley.
"He was a very, very good son and I love him very, very much," Carlos' father Gustavo Madrigal said. "I will miss him the rest of my life."
His family says he was a genuinely nice guy and will be greatly missed by everyone he knew.
"He was pretty close to me," Gustavo Madrigal said. "Anywhere I go, he is with me. That was a great kid."
"One weekend, we would just hang out," brother Felipe Madrigal said. "He took me to the movies, out to eat and all that."
"So many people -- when they are gone -- people will say, 'Yeah, they were a good person," said Lisa Madrigal. "In Carlos' case, he really was a good person. You couldn't find anyone one that [didn't] love him."
He is survived by his father, step-mother, two sisters and a brother.
Carlos Madrigal's funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Ripley Funeral Home.
