BOONEVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) -- Booneville police say their initial investigation shows the death of a two-year-old over the weekend was an accident.

Police Chief Michael Ramey says his officers were called to the scene of a traffic accident involving a child on Martin Luther King Drive around 4:45 p.m. Saturday.

He says it appears the child was playing and someone attempting to leave the home backed out of the driveway and struck the child.

Ramey says they are not releasing the names of the child or the driver of the vehicle.

Coroner Greg Sparks say the child died at the scene of the accident.

An autopsy is being performed today in Jackson.

Ramey says the evidence points to the death being a tragic accident.
