BOONEVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) -- Beulah Gater remembers a time not too long ago when rainy nights were long ones.

"It had got so bad I had to move out of my den. I was emptying five gallon buckets of water if it rained practically all night long."

Not anymore.

On this day she will turn the key and begin to move in.

"I just thank God. God is a big part of this. He's the biggest part of this. I don't know. I had to pinch myself," Gater said.

Gater is one of three low-income families to qualify for a Housing and Urban Development grant.

The Home Investment Partnerships Program offers grant money to those who meet rigid guidelines.

Those who qualify must be current homeowners for a minimum of one year. Financial and other information are throughly examined.

Northeast Mississippi Planning and Development District's Darlene Grimes helped to secure grant money to make the project possible.

"It just brings real joy to my heart-to our hearts here at the district to help these low-income individuals that wouldn't otherwise have a place to live."

Other projects are in the works in Baldwyn. Demolition has begun. Construction will follow.

Grimes says the new construction is encouraging others to spruce up their property.

"People were beginning to spruce up their own homes in an effort to beautify the community more. It seems to have brought pride-more pride to our community."
