BALDWYN, Miss. (WTVA) - At Food Giant in Baldwyn some shoppers we talked to were out buying items they'll need for a traditional Thanksgiving meal on Thursday.

Donnica Billups of Baldwyn said, "I'm just going to be cooking turkey and ham and dressing. I'm hoping to have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving."

Dennis White of Guntown said, "We're going to have turkey and dressing, sweet potato pie and all kinds of vegetables."

Keeping the shelves stocked with those items this week is priority number one for stores like this one.

Billy Penny of Food Giant said, "Usually they come in wanting turkeys, hams, sweet potatoes. We have to pre-book ahead of time to make sure we have enough for our customers."

Along with turkeys, green beans, and dessert there are other food items that are big sellers during this week.

It's the main course items that may be served the day before or day after Thanksgiving on Thursday.

Penny said, "Rib eyes, pork loins, beef roast and things like that are for the day after Thanksgiving. It's also for people who don't want turkey or ham which are the traditional items."

Store officials say this is one of their busiest weeks of the year, and they expect to see big crowds up until Thanksgiving.

That includes some repeat customers.

Dennis White of Guntown said, "You don't ever get everything the first trip. You have to make two to three trips. We're hoping for a big day with all the kids there."

Most grocery stores will be open for at least some of Thanksgiving for the shoppers who need to pick up any last minute items they may need for the table.
