BALDWYN, Miss. (WTVA) -- A late-night car crash in Baldwyn ends with one person dead and two injured, according to authorities.
It happened at about 11:20 p.m. Saturday on Ripley Road, not far from where the roadway intersects Highway 45. The wreck took place on the Prentiss County side of the city.
Prentiss County Coroner Greg Sparks said the preliminary report indicates 23-year-old Ashley Gaston of Memphis died of multiple blunt force trauma.
Gaston was a passenger in the back seat of the vehicle.
Sparks said the driver sustained serious injuries and a passenger received broken bones in the wreck. They were both sent to North Mississippi Medical Center. Their names have not been released and their current conditions are not known.
Baldwyn Police Capt. Kevin Pannell said another officer had tried to stop the vehicle, but it kept traveling at a high rate of speed. Eventually it lost control and veered off Ripley Road, hitting a tree. It's not clear why the officer was trying to stop the vehicle.
The rear of the Nissan Altima sustained major damage, with most of the trunk and back end ripped and twisted from the force of the wreck.
Pannell said that one of the Baldwyn officers had video of the accident from one of the dash cameras mounted inside his patrol car.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol will be assisting in the investigation. Pannell says they've agreed to bring an accident reconstruction team to the scene to provide more information to local authorities.
Sparks said an autopsy will be performed on Gaston Monday morning.
