BOONEVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) --  Booneville Animal Shelter held its first animal adoption day Saturday.

Shelter volunteers want to make sure every pet gets a permanent home.

Over the years, the shelter struggled to find volunteers.

Now that more are involved, people are adopting more pets, but there are still many more who need homes.

The shelter is open for pet adoptions during the week.

If you're not sure whether you want to adopt, there is another option to try.

"If you're undecided, I would suggest that you come in and foster the dog for a day, a week or whatever," shelter volunteer Sheila Luff said. "Then you can make your decision and come back and we would be glad to sign the final adoption papers on it."

Luff said dogs who stay in the shelter for a long time have to be euthanized.

The shelter's goal is have enough adoptions so that they won't have to do that anymore.
