RANDOLPH, Miss. (WTVA) -- Approximately 4,500 Pontotoc County residents were without power Tuesday night when a short circuit in the power system caused the entire McGregor's Chapel substation to trip offline.

Chuck Howell, manager at the Pontotoc Electric Power Association, says the power went out around 10:30 p.m. with a bright flash.

Several people, from Randolph to Thaxton, notified the Pontotoc Electric Power Association about the flash that Howell says "lit up the sky in a big way."

The power was restored without problems about 45 minutes later when the substation was re-energized, but engineers say the initial cause of the outage is not clear.

Anyone who was near the source of the flash and can give its location is asked to report the information to the Pontotoc Electric Power Association at 662-489-3211.
