PONTOTOC, Miss. (WTVA) -- It's harvest time down on the farm in Pontotoc County.

The setting for this farm is the Pontotoc County Adult Detention Center.

Prisoners have begun to pick corn and peas for what is expected to be a good harvest this year.

Sheriff Leo Mask says the program saves the county a great deal of money because the prisoners grow and harvest all their own vegetables.

"I'm glad to be able to have this project and growing our own food and stuff and because it helps offset costs and then we could use that money for other items that we need to purchase," Sheriff Leo Mask said.

While many commercial farmers hope for more rain, Sheriff Mask says he is relieved that he is able to irrigate their crops.
