PONTOTOC, Miss. (WTVA) -- An Oxford woman died in a traffic accident on Highway 9 in Pontotoc County Thursday afternoon.
A Mississippi Highway Patrol spokespersons tells WTVA.com Xanaka Burgess, 34, was driving a Chevrolet pickup northbound on the roadway around Noon between Pontotoc and Sherman.
Troopers say the vehicle apparently hydroplaned and overturned several times before coming to a stop in the median.
Burgess died at the scene of the accident and her passenger, Teneeah Hilliard, 34, of Oxford was carried to the North Mississippi Medical Center with moderate injuries.
Both women were wearing there seatbelts.
Burgess is the wife of former Ole Miss football player Derrick Burgess.
Troopers were also working a second accident on Highway 9 around the same time in Pontotoc County.
They say Jackson Gregory, 19, of Pittsboro and Jody Rogers of Bruce were taken to the hospital when their SUV hydroplaned, ran off the roadway and struck a tree.
In Tishomingo County, weather played a factor in a head-on collision on Highway 25 north of Iuka near North Crossroads.
Authorities say one person was airlifted to the MED in Memphis where he underwent surgery for life-threatening injuries.
In Prentiss County, troopers say Michael Barnett, 20, of Baldwyn was injured when his car hydroplaned while passing an 18-wheeler on Highway 45.
The car hit the truck, then ran off the roadway and struck a concrete culvert.
Baldwyn was carried to the North Mississippi Medical Center by ambulance.
All of the accident remain under investigation of the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Wet roads caused numerous accidents across the area Thursday.
