TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — A man is under arrest in Lee County accused of stealing another man's car after asking for a ride to the store.
34-year-old Billy Staten of Pontotoc appeared Thursday in Lee County Justice Court where he was formally charged with armed robbery.
Sheriff Jim Johnson says Staten went to a home on Palmetto Road Wednesday evening and asked for the ride from an older man.
The man obliged, and the sheriff says it was during the ride that Staten, while sitting in the backseat, pulled a knife and ordered the man to drive down a road in a field.
They eventually got out, a chase ensued and the man threw his car keys toward Staten.
Johnson says that's when Staten took off, leaving the man in the field.
The stolen car was later found wrecked in Pontotoc County.
Judge Pat Carr set bond in the case at $100,000.
