BLUE SPRINGS, Miss. (WTVA) -  If you happened to see a large amount of billowing smoke on Friday afternoon near Blue Springs, you were not alone.

After making a few phone calls, WTVA.com was able to learn the source of the smoke.

The Union County Sheriff's Department told us that the Mississippi Forestry Commission was conducting a controlled burn near Highway 78.

A spokesperson for the Mississippi Forestry Commission says they are conducting a controlled burn on about 175 acres to clear out debris in preparation for planting some new seedlings.
