TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- The Mississippi Department of Transportation will open the new four-lane stretch of Highway 9 from Pontotoc to Sherman on Monday.

An MDOT traffic alert says the widened 10-mile stretch of highway will open at between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Monday.

Work on the widening project began in July of 2011 and was expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Eutaw Construction was awarded an $87 million contract to use a design-build process that allowed them to do all the work necessary to get the road ready for traffic.
