PONTOTOC, Miss. (WTVA) - With the first day of school rapidly approaching agencies are working to make sure children have the necessary school supplies for the upcoming school year.

In Pontotoc, hundreds of people made their way in and through the West Heights Baptist Church as United Way of Northeast Mississippi held its second weekend of Back 2 School Resources Fair.

For over two hours, volunteers helped hand out backpacks and school supplies along with other necessities to those in need.

People on the receiving end said it's very beneficial to have the resource fairs in multiple locations.

"It is very convenient to be able to come and get school supplies for our children," said parent Diana McMillen. "In previous years, families had to go to Tupelo for resources like this."

In order for children to receive the backpacks with school supplies, they must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
