STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) — More than 700 third graders from Starkville and Oktibbeha County schools went on a field trip Wednesday to the Mississippi Horse Park.
The students got to experience what is called Farmtastic.
It was a hands-on agriculture event that taught students the value of agriculture and the origins of their food, fiber and fuel.
The students learned about the major crops that grow in Oktibbeha County and the livestock industry as well as which animals are common on Mississippi farms.
"We hope that the events that they're going through and the stations they're going through today will help them to realize the importance of agriculture so that they will be involved in agriculture later in their lives," said Julie White, co-coordinator of the event.
The students also heard about the importance of fresh homegrown products and the advantages to eating locally grown fruits and vegetables.
