LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) -- A Starkville man has died following a two-vehicle crash Saturday morning on Highway 45 Alternate.
Trooper Criss Turnipseed with the Mississippi Highway Patrol said the department got the call at approximately 8 a.m.
The accident took place near the Lowndes County/Clay County line.
Turnipseed said 77-year-old Walter Sykes attempted to enter the northbound lane from a private drive in a 2002 Ford Ranger when he was struck by a northbound 2009 Toyota 4-Runner, driven by Meredith M. McClure, 26, of Starkville.
Authorities said the impact caused Sykes' vehicle to overturn, ejecting him from the truck.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said Sykes was then transported to North Mississippi Medical Center-West Point where he later died.
Turnipseed said Sykes was not wearing a seat belt.
An unidentified passenger with Sykes was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Columbus with what's described as non life-threatening injuries.
McClure received minor injuries in the accident.
Both McClure and the passenger in the other vehicle were wearing seat belts, Turnipseed said.
The accident remains under investigation.
