MABEN, Miss. (WTVA) -- Tuesday, February 12, is a big day for a local 4-H club.
Members are being honored by the state for volunteer work in the community.
The Controllers Generation Two 4-H in Maben is the top chapter in Mississippi, according to state officials.
"What we do is we just try to focus a lot of ours on health. We have a lot of people and children who have had open heart surgeries and a lot of adults who have had surgeries," said member Rose Graham.
The club will receive the Governor's Award for meeting certain criteria and volunteer work in the community.
"We had to show our community service, participate in workshops and training," Graham explained.
There are 35 adults and 32 children involved with the chapter and it continutes to grow.
"4-h is very important especially for the young people. They will always have something to do," said member Joann Ford.
"It's a great program to get into. You can learn a lot things like the proper way to set a table, learn how to judge agriculture, planting and farming," said Jonathan Love.
Members are excited about the recognition they'll receive at the capitol, but there are more important things to remember.
"Receiving the award is fine, but the main thing is others are being helped and served through the organizatin and that means so much to us," Graham said.
The club works with adult literacy workshops, canned food drives and the Adopt-A-Family program.
