STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - A PT17 Stearman and an AT6 Advanced Trainer performed a flyover during the Starkville Oktibbeha County Memorial Day Ceremony.

They remembered fallen Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines for what they did to ensure freedom for the country they served.

"Those who paid the ultimate sacrifice got a call and they went to do their duty," adds Robert Green Co-Chair Military Affairs Committee.  "I doubt many of them did not expect to return home but a lot of them didn't."

On the front lawn of the Oktibbeha County Courthouse sits a monument containing most of the names of Oktibbeha County residents that perished from World War I to modern time while serving the country.

There is a movement underway to raise more money to bring in a new monument that will contain all the names of the heroes from Oktibbeha County who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

"It will mean a whole lot because I have several comrades on there that have lost their lives in Vietnam," adds Thomas J. Boyd, Vietnam Veteran. "I was a part of that war so it means a lot to me to get a new one."

While that movement is underway, the military continues to protect our country's freedom which is why veterans say events like a Memorial Day ceremony help make their sacrifice and service all the worth while.

"This means the same thing that happens every Memorial Day in Starkville I think we're really good about remembering our friends who have lost their lives," adds Wilmot Thomson, World war II Veteran. "This is probably even better than the ones before."

The Military Affairs Committee is hoping to raise $10,000 to incorporate the existing bronze plaque with new names added of the fallen troops.
