STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) -- Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman has vetoed a pay raise for aldermen and the mayor.

City aldermen voted 6 to 1 for the pay increases earlier this month.

Under the approved measure, the raises would go into effect on October 1 and increase the pay for alderman from $12,000 to $15,000 per year.

The mayor's salary would increase from $60,000 to $71,500.

The board also voted to study the salaries of other city workers when compared to pay in comparable sized cities around the region.

In his veto, Wiseman applauded the efforts for aldermen to seriously study the pay city employees received, but questioned the decision to raise salaries on elected positions without answering the question about city workers pay.

Wiseman signed the veto on Tuesday.
