MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) -- The sheriff of Monroe County says guardrails would help along a section of Highway 45 between Hamilton and Lowndes County where a driver drowned after his car went off the road Thursday.

Antonio Moore, 38, of Columbus was driving south when his car swerved into the northbound lanes before it rolled into a gravel pit.

"Out here on this particular stretch of highway, the gravel pits are right up next to the road," said Sheriff Cecil Cantrell. "If you leave the road here and you get off on the state highway, you just about go in the water. It's a dangerous stretch of highway here in Monroe County."

A state transportation official says even if there is a body of water next to a road, guardrails are not required.
