OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) -- A federal court judge has set a 2014 trial date in a civil lawsuit filed against the Monroe County School District, administrators, and former Smithville football coach Dwight Bowling.
The lawsuit was filed by a former student at Smithville School who claims he was coerced by Bowling to engage in sexual activity at the school, at Bowling's home, and at other times.
The man claims several reports were made to school administrators about Bowling's conduct, but says administrators asked students not to repeat the claims or were told to apologize to Bowling about the accusations.
The lawsuit says the actions violated the student's rights.
The court record shows the plaintiff's are asking for monetary damages for past, present, and future medical bills, pain and suffering, mental anguish, emotional injuries, embarrassment, and humilitation.
The lawsuit, scheduled for trial on March 3, 2014, is the second filed in federal court against Bowling and the school district.
Bowling pleaded guilty to federal and state charges including fondling, sexual battery, child exploitation, bribery of a witness, tampering with a witness, and enticement of a minor for sex.
He is currently in a federal prison in Petersburg, Virginia serving 35 years on all charges.
