ABERDEEN, Miss. (WTVA) - A shooting leaves one man injured and the suspected teenage shooter behind bars awaiting charges.

The incident happened Saturday morning on Mobile Street.

One resident of Aberdeen recalls what happened.

"I heard three gunshots, and it was very loud, and the next thing I knew I heard the police responding quite quickly," resident Lynette Stark said. "I heard sirens and the ambulance siren, then I received a phone call from my mother who has a scanner, and she said, 'Get inside and lock your doors. There's a shooter loose.'"

Neighbors say the shooter remained at large for quite some time, eluding law enforcement in a section of Aberdeen which -- for people who live in the area -- said they're shocked at Saturday morning's turn of events.

"This is a very nice neighborhood; it's very quiet and peaceful," said Stark. "Right now, you can hear the birds singing. That's all the time. This was very unusual and it was shocking."

"I've lived in this neighborhood for years and it's a nice and quiet neighborhood," said resident Carla Arevalo. "I was shocked at what happened."

Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene and crossed over Mobile Street, disappearing into thick, dense woods.

Several hours later, after being spotted in the Aberdeen Historic District, multiple law enforcement agencies were able to apprehend the suspect in close proximity to a school.

"He evidently knew the area quite well because he was going in and out of all the wooded areas," Stark said.

The victim, identified as David Puddister of Aberdeen, was transported to the North Mississippi Medical Center and is receiving treatment for his injury.

He's listed in good condition as of Sunday night.

The 17 year-old suspect is currently being detained at the Lee County Juvenile Detention Center and is expected to be charged with aggravated assault this week.
