ABERDEEN, Miss. (WTVA) -- Petitions are circulating throughout the city of Aberdeen.
Chief of Police Henry Randle is calling on residents to keep the position of police chief an elected one.
Recently, a majority of the Board of Aldermen decided to pursue changes in the city's special charter.
They are hoping to change the position of police chief to an appointed one.
The city's attorney says this is a common move for cities who want to become more progressive.
Proposed changes to the charter include nineteenth century language which refers to slavery.
Chief Randle says those changes have already been pursued and he questions the timing of changing his position to an appointed one.
He wants voters to make that decision.
