TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — Nearly 150 soldiers with the Mississippi Army National Guard returned home Thursday after spending almost a year in Afghanistan.

The 289th Vertical Construction Company, based in Bruce and Water Valley, flew into the Tupelo Regional Airport with family and friends cheering and waiting for them.

Among them was Carol Knight of Amory, who described what life was like with her husband away from home.

"It's really hard," said Knight.  "It's like being a single parent for a year."

The soldiers spent 11 months building military bases during their tour of duty.

Knight's husband said the sacrifices his family and others made while he and the other soldiers were overseas didn't go unnoticed.

"The families sacrifice more than we do," said Staff Sergeant Josh Knight.
