NETTLETON, Miss. (WTVA) -- Nettleton school officials met with Lee and Monroe County law enforcement Friday to discuss safety plans on campus.
The Nettleton Consolidated- Line School District sits squarely in the heart of town, partly in both Lee and Monroe Counties.
It is also surrounded by homes and roads where traffic moves constantly each day.
The school district has always had a safety plan in place and there's a resource officer.
"We have a school resource officer full-time right now. We are looking at getting another SRO for our primary school. Today, was just about collaboration. So, if you have an incident you can get everybody involved. Everybody is familiar with your campus," said Superintendent Russell Taylor.
Administrators say if there is a code-red incidnet; there would be many things to consider.
"Well, immediately we want to secure our buildings. We want to make sure our children are safe in their classrooms. Our teachers are going to take care of them. We're just going to start looking for the problem," said Tim Erickson, of the Lee County Sheriff's Department.
"What we are suggesting is to have Lee County S.W.A.T. teams here and do an effort together on how we're going to clear the buildings," Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell. "What we're going to do about a safe place off campus. How we are gojng to bring the school busses in and out, and take the children different places. Also, looking at some food and drink for those children to try and keep them calm."
The meeting coincides with a move in the State legislature to put more resource officers on campuses.
Senate Bill 2659 would establish a Mississippi Community-Oriented Policing program called MCOPS.
Grants for the program would be administered through the State Department of Education to hire school resource ofificers.
