AMORY, Miss. (WTVA) -- A lot can happen in 365 days and for the city of Amory a years time has lead to a total transformation of the Downtown area.
"It's been a life long dream to own a sporting goods store," said J.D. Walters.
Walters' new business, Outdoors Advantage, is one of 22 new businesses that have set up shop in downtown Amory in just over a year.
"Being on Main St. is just a bonus for me," said Walters.
After having his first day of business in January, Walters just recently completed renovations on the former 7-Eleven he once worked in as a high school student in the 1970s.
"You've always heard the old stories of I started here sweeping the floors and now it's mine...that is exactly what happened," said Walters.
Carol Knight is the Amory Main Street manager and says currently, downtown Amory is nearly at capacity with businesses ranging from retailers to coffee shops to restaurants.
"The actual traffic and presence downtown has changed so much," said Knight.
Sandi Roberts is the owner of The Mall on Main and True South and says she welcomes the new businesses.
"Some of them actually came from our business they had booths in The Mall on Main and then they expanded and opened their own and that's what we want. [For] them to get a start in here and see they can make it and then go out and open their own businesses," said Roberts.
Knight says downtown Amory has seen tremendous growth so far, but there is still more work to do.
"We just want it to be a day trip destination that you can go to for all of your shopping needs and have a cup of coffee and eat and enjoy your day," said Knight.
