AMORY, Miss. (WTVA) -- It was a terrifying few moments for Tiffany Carr and her family. She feels lucky to be alive.

"Very lucky. I just thank God my grandbaby wasn't here," Carr said.

Carr says they were warned through a text message that there was going to be trouble.

They called the police, and as they were arriving, weapons began to fire. Carr says her son fired back with a handgun.

One Amory Police Officer was almost caught in the crossfire.

"They were down here on this corner and they went on around this way and next thing we know it was shots going everywhere," Carr added.

"I think this has to do with a domestic problem that happened earlier in the day. That it's not actually tied to this residence, but it's tied to the people that were present," Amory Police Chief Ronnie Bowen said.

Tiffany Carr says her niece and a boyfriend were in a dispute about child visitation rights.

"This is something that is very random, but something we're investigating and trying to get to the bottom of what took place and find out who is responsible," Chief Bowen added.

A second look at the scene yields one more clue. A bullet was found inside a scooter.

"I was taking it apart to look to see if a bullet or what it was and there's a bullet laying down on the motor of my scooter," Carr added.

This close call has the family on edge.

"The ones that [did] this we want them punished. That's all we want because they really messed up a lot here and I just want the truth to come out about all of it," Judy Hawkins said.

"What my concern is the safety of the neighborhood. When you start having shots being fired in a residential area-day or night-that's not a good thing," Chief Bowen said.
