MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) -- Jim Conaway likes nothing more than to drive his custom vehicle.
He says he doesn't always get a smooth ride in Monroe County.
Better roads sound good to him.
"It's great. I've lived here since the 1970's and they need it bad," Conaway said.
There are both good and bad roads throughout Monroe County.
Supervisors recently approved a $3,000,000 bond issue to make road improvements. Just how that money is to be spent has been a source of contention among the board members. No one wants the lion's share to go to any particular district.
After extensive research, a plan is in hand.
"I'm glad they are. I hope they get this road here pretty quick. It's in bad shape," Monroe County resident Ricky Harris said.
The plan calls for road improvements in all districts. The bond money will be combined with money the county budgets for road maintenance for the next four years.
"Well, I'm excited we decided to do less money for a shorter period of time. We got a plan and I think we will all come together and next year I hope we will be able to put additional money into just regular maintenance of roads," Monroe County Supervisor Robert Tomey said.
"The road administrator and county road administrator as well as five supervisors have worked hard on this over the last five or six months to incorporate a plan that would benefit all citizens of Monroe County," Monroe County Supervisor Doug Wiggins said.
"It's gonna be great for the county. We're looking ahead at economic development to make the roads safer," Monroe County Supervisor Carol Crawford said.
The plan calls for around 600 miles of road work.
