KOSCIUSKO, Miss. (WTVA) -- The Mississippi State Veteran's Affairs Board honored the woman instrumental in the success of the state's veteran nursing homes.

Retired Brigadier General Martha Jo Leslie was honored during a ceremony at the Mississippi State Veteran's Home in Kosciusko Friday morning.

Leslie began her military career in 1959.

Officials say she played a major role in the success of the veteran's homes across the state, the creation of the Mississippi State Veteran's Cemetery, and the Mississippi Persian Gulf War Memorial.

The MSVAB operates homes in Collins, Jackson, Kosciusko and Oxford.
