TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - After much discussion Tuesday night, the Tupelo city council voted to not accept a request from the national company CarMax to locate near the Mall at Barnes Crossing.

While some of those who voted against the measure, said beforehand that they were not voting against the dealership locating in Tupelo.
Instead, they said they were supporting those used car dealership owners who years ago tried to locate in the same area and were reportedly told that they could not.
City planning representatives stated before the vote that the regulations adopted in the late 1990's do allow used car dealers to request locating in that district.
Tuesday night's vote does not keep CarMax from requesting to locate in another part of the city.
