STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - The Starkville Police Department has put out an alert to warn residents about an active scam.

Police say several residents have received texts, phone calls and messages that say their Cadence Bank accounts have been temporarily deactivated.

The message tells the person that they need to call a cell phone number to reactivate.

Cadence Bank makes it very clear that this is what's called a "phishing" scam aimed to gain access to customer accounts.

Officials say residents should ignore the automated messages, and you can call your local bank for any concerns.

Authorities remind consumers to never give out any personal or account information.
