STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) -- The Starkville Police Department is continuing to investigate a fatal single vehicle traffic accident that occurred in the parking lot of McDonalds East on Hwy. 12.
It happened just after 2:05 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Officers say when they arrived on the scene they found Kaleb Dwayne Barker, 18, of Lucedale, seriously injured.
Barker was transported to Oktibbeha County Hospital and subsequently airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson, where he died as a result of the injuries sustained.
Barker was a Mississippi State freshman kinesiology major.
The following is a statement from MSU President Mark E. Keenum regarding the tragic death:
"The Mississippi State University family is heartbroken today over this very tragic accident," said Keenum. "Kaleb was a young man with a great deal of promise. We feel a deep sense of grief and our thoughts and prayers will remain with Kaleb's family and his many friends in Lucedale and here at MSU."
The driver of the vehicle, Sawyer Tomas Steede, 18, also of Lucedale, has been arrested and charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and is currently out on a $50,000 bond.
He will appear in the Starkville Municipal Court on October 21.
Mr. Barker was a passenger in the bed of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado two door truck.
Halli Camille Reasons, 18, of Dyersburg, Tenn., was riding in the bed of the pickup truck. She was treated at Oktibbeha County Hospital for minor injuries and released.
Details of the incident are continuing to be investigated by the crash reconstruction team of the Starkville Police Department and the detective squad.
