Grand jury to get case of suspect in girl's death

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — The case of a south Mississippi man charged with capital murder in the slaying and sexual assault of a 5-year-old girl will go before the next Harrison County grand jury.

After hearing police evidence, The Sun Herald reports ( ) Harrison County Court Judge Robin Alfred Midcalf found probable cause to bind the case over to the next panel.

A Gulfport police detective testified that 29-year-old Alberto Julio Garcia admitted sexually assaulting Ja'naya Thompson and helping hang her with two pairs of socks. The little girl was reported missing from her home the night of July 16. Her body was found the next day in an abandoned trailer nearby.

The coroner said she was strangled to death.

Garcia is being held without bond.
