JACKSON (WTVA) -- Governor Phil Bryant has authoritized the Mississippi Department of Education to take over the Claiborne County and Leflore County school districts.

The governor signed the state of emergency Monday.

The Mississippi Board of Education asked for the declaration during its meeting on Friday.

The Commission on School Accreditation and the State Board of Education have found that an extreme emergency exists in each district, jeopardizing the safety, security and educational interests of students.

State conservators will be put in place in each district.
