Former DeSoto County state senator Guerieri dies

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (AP) _ Former Mississippi state Sen. George E. Guerieri has died.

A Democrat who represented DeSoto County in the state Legislature from 1980 to 1992, Guerieri died Tuesday in Anniston, Ala. He was 86.

A funeral Mass was held today in Southaven, with burial in Cleveland, Miss.

A retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, Guerieri served as a sailor on a hospital ship during World War II and later served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He worked for a time the Army chief of staff's office at the Pentagon.

Guerieri's wife Jewel Abel Guerieri died earlier, as did his son George Guerieri Jr.

He is survived by a daughter, Judy Hobdy of Anniston, Ala.; his son Ron Guerieri of Madison, Miss., and grandchildren and great grandchildren.
