COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) -- Shortly after Airbus Helicopters, Incorporated handed over its 300th UH-72A Lakota helicopter, the U.S. Army called for the production of 10 more.

The U.S. Army announced Thursday it had approved a contract modification worth more than $55.3 million for the Columbus-based company to produce the additional helicopters.

The helicopters are used for military missions, disaster response, border protection and pilot training.

Officials say the Lakotas are expected to be completed on June 30, 2015.
