COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) -- A West Point man faces murder charges after authorities say he fled the scene of a shooting early Sunday morning.

Columbus police initially responded to a vehicle accident just before 3:30 a.m.

Upon arriving at the 1600 block of Highway 45 North, officers found John Easley, 47, in the passenger seat of a 2004 maroon Chevrolet Malibu with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.

Shortly afterward, police began a manhunt to locate the driver of the vehicle and apprehended James Newsom, 30, on Lincoln Road.

Newsom is being held in the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center, after being arrested and charged with murder.

No bond has been set at this time.

Columbus Police Department spokesperson Glenda Buckhalter says the case remains under investigation.
