LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) -- Recovery efforts continued Sunday for a man believed to have drowned while playing with friends, according to the Lowndes County coroner.

Coroner Greg Merchant said it happened Saturday evening after 7 p.m. when a group of friends was playing soccer on the bank of the Buttahatchee Creek near Lawrence Bridge.

Someone kicked the soccer ball into the water, and a man went in to retrieve it, Merchant said.

Friends told authorities the unidentified man went under shortly afterward.

Because recovery teams still have not located the man's body, Merchant said it's being referred to as a "possible drowning" at this point.
