COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) - Members of the Base Community Council got a tour of the new 12,000 feet center runway at Columbus Air Force Base.
The $31.3 million construction project has been underway since March and is now 66 percent complete.
It's the most extensive overhaul to the runway since it was completed in 1959 to support military operations during the Cold War.
Lt. Col. David Meissen, Commander of the 14th Civil Engineer Squadron, said, "Right now it's a 12,000 foot runway. We're replacing the inner 10,000 feet. We're putting ten inches of concrete down the entire length."
With around the clock construction the runway at the base is expected to be complete by late August.
