OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) -- A Columbus man has been sentenced to prison time for providing people prescription drugs outside the scope of his medical practice.

Dr. Mark Burtman, 48, pleaded guilty to a three count federal indictment in June.

Burtman is accused of writing precriptions for Lortab, Xanax, and Percoset "without a legitimate medical purpose".

Authorities say he practiced obstetrics and gynecology at the Urgent Care clinic on Chubby Drive in Columbus.

Federal and state agents searched his office and home in June of 2011.

He told the court he had voluntarily surrendered his medical license.

Burtman was sentenced to 13 months in prison and two years probation.

He was also fined $3,000 and ordered to give up his doctor's license.

The federal judge allowed him to remain free on bond until January when he will report to a still-to-be determined federal prison.
