LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) -- A Lowndes County man has died after being involved in a three-vehicle wreck on Highway 12 Sunday.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said William Mixon, 65, was driving west on the highway when he collided with another vehicle head-on. The impact sent his vehicle into the lane of an oncoming vehicle which hit him as well.

It happened just before noon on a stretch of highway approximately three miles from the Alabama state line.

The coroner said Mixon was transported to Baptist Memorial-Golden Triangle where he was pronounced dead on arrival from multiple trauma. A number of other people were transported and those injuries are still being assessed, but Merchant said he didn't believe they were life-threatening.

Merchant said it wasn't clear whether Mixon was in the correct lane or not when he was struck.

The accident remains under investigation.
