COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) -- The Mississippi Department of Education is providing a grant to help MUW continue to offer a program designed to improve student achievement in math and critical thinking.
MDE will provide $1.2 million to the Center for Creative Learning to continue the Creating High Achievement in Mathematics and Problem Solving program for three more years.
Since it was created in 2004, CHAMPS has assisted more than 400 teachers in northeast Mississippi with strategies to help students excel in the classroom.
The program includes an intensive two-week seminar for teachers along with follow-up weekend mini-conferences working with students in a classroom.
CHAMPS also provides online professional learning communities to assist with Common Core implementation, data coaching, and a mathematics resource center.
Project director Kate Brown says the program has become synonymous with meaningful, useful professional development for middle-school teachers in mathematics.
