COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) - Columbus Police said one person is dead after a shooting early Friday morning.

Chief Selvain McQueen said the incident occurred around two a.m. near 21st Street and 3rd Avenue North in Columbus.

McQueen said a female driver and male passenger were dropping the victim off at his residence when the suspect, Randall Carl Cooper Jr., began shooting the front seat passenger.

According to authorities, the victim was able to make it to the sidewalk, but the suspect got out of the car and once again started shooting.

Cooper then jumped in the driver's seat, but the female was able to jump in the back seat before the suspect fled the scene.

McQueen said the suspect stopped the car a couple blocks down the road and was able to run away, at which point, the female returned to the scene and called 911.

Police said the victim had multiple gunshot wounds to the head, stomach and side.

The victim died on the way to Baptist Golden Triangle Hospital.

Authorities have not detained the suspect, and they say it's likely that he's armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Columbus Police Department.
