BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WTVA) -- Belle Foods is asking a federal bankruptcy judge to approve the sale of 12 locations, including the Southern Family Market in Columbus.

The grocery corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this month and announced plans to close 13 stores by August 3.

In new court documents, the company asked to sell the Columbus location, a Piggly Wiggly store in Meridian, and 10 other locations in Alabama.

Company officials say they are trying to reconcile $42 million in debt with the moves.

Prior to the bankruptcy filing, Belle Foods operated 57 stores in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Mississippi.

The stores scheduled to remain open include the Piggly Wiggly in Starkville.
