COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) -- A committee charged with reviewing the potential for athletic programs at Mississippi University for Women says the school should move ahead with further evaluation on the subject.

The committee expressed general support for a return of sports teams in some form.

The MUW Blues competed in basketball, softball, tennis

MUW President Jim Borsig supports a return of athletics as part of the on-campus experience.

The school will conduct a self-study to determine the costs of returning to athletics.

The range includes everything from club sports to intercollegiate Athletics.

The MUW Blues basketball teams won the AIAW National Basketball Championship in 1971 and finished runner-up in 1974.

The school competed in NCAA Division II and was a member of the Gulf South Conference when it dropped intercollegiate sports in 2003.

The school also competed in softball, volleyball and tennis.

The school did not field any men's athletic teams after becoming co-educational in 1982.
