COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) -- The body of a Columbus man missing in the Buttahatchie River since Saturday night has been recovered.

Coroner Greg Merchant says witnesses say Bernado Lopez, 30, went into the river to retrieve a ball around 7 p.m. Saturday night.

He says the current was apparently too strong and carried Lopez away.

The search continued through the weekend, including the use of a net picked up Sunday by the Columbus Fire and Rescue.

The net, paid for through donations from the VFW, is designed to be stretched across rivers and streams in rescue and recovery missions.

Lopez's body was found in the net Monday morning.

Merchant says the incident remains under investigation.
