COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) -- The investigation is underway into the death of a woman found in a hotel swimming pool in downtown Columbus Thursday night.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant tells a hotel clerk noticed Amber Nicole Shelnut, 21, in the water around 7 p.m. and called 9-1-1.

Merchant says a passerby also noticed the woman and pulled her out of the water and began CPR.

Shelnut was taken to the Baptist Memorial Hospital - Golden Triangle where she was pronounced dead.

Merchant says Shelnut's address was listed in Alabama, but she had been living in the Columbus area for sometime.

He says the preliminary cause of death has been ruled as drowning.

Merchant says this if the fifth drowning in Lowndes County this year, including four this summer.
